* * *
Good to his word, the sergeant had cleared us to land at the helicopter pad at the hospital. Soon, we were running down the hallway to Trace Jonesâs room. There were two officers on duty. They grimly waved us into the room without a word, and one of them followed us in.
Trace looked at me, his eyes wide with surprise. âWhy are you here again?â he demanded. âAnd why is Sheriff Statton with you this time?â
Before I could answer, Lisette said, in a voice that meant business, âWe need some information, and we need it now.â
I produced my small recorder, and Lisette went through the ritual of making sure his rights werenât violated. He seemed to have no qualms about talking to us.
I began the questioning and got right to the point. âDetective Patterson has been abducted,â I said. âWe think it was your friends who took her. Where were Junior and Wyatt going to take her?â
I was watching his face very closely for his reaction. He seemed genuinely shocked. âWhy would they do that?â he asked in a weak voice.
âTrace,â I said, leaning close to his bandaged face. âIf you know anything about those two, you better tell us now. If they harm her and you know about it, you will be charged right along with them.â
âMy momâs death is my fault,â he said as tears formed in his eyes. âAnd shooting at you was my fault. But I swear I donât know anything about what happened to my dad or to Detective Patterson. I swear.â
Now Lisette leaned down low. âTrace, please, if you have any idea, even any guesses, please tell us. Weâve got to find her before she gets hurt.â
âSheriff, I know youâre a good cop. I know my dad was a jerk. And I know that Detective Jarbi is a good cop too. I swear if I knew anything, anything at all, Iâd tell you. Youâve got to believe me.â
âPlease, Trace,â I said. âWe need help.â
âSheâs in love with you, isnât she?â he said out of the blue. âAnd I donât blame you if you love her. Sheâs a good gal and as pretty as they come. And youâve been fair to me. I swear that I donât know what those guys are up to. If I could help you get her back, I would.â
I straightened up. âTrace, Iâm not in love with Detective Patterson, but she is a very good friend, and Iâll move heaven and earth to find her. And if anyone hurts her, theyâll have me to answer to.â
âAnd me,â Lisette said darkly. She laid a card on the small table by Traceâs bed. âIf you hear anything at all, you call me.â
âI will, Sheriff. I promise.â
Back in the hallway a minute later, the officers and I talked. Lisette asked that everything Trace said to anyone, on the phone or in person, be monitored. The two officers agreed readily and promised that until Jarbi was found, there would not only be an officer outside the door but one in the room as well.
